Venezuela and Brazil to expand energy, commercial and military cooperation

On Wednesday night, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro informed that Venezuela and Brazil have decided to significantly expand their bilateral ties in different areas, including energy cooperation, science and technology, agriculture, and territorial defense.

Regarding energy, the head of state explained that the agreement reached Tuesday between both parties recognized the need to ally to guarantee investments in oil, petrochemicals, and gas.

He added that Caracas and Brasilia agreed to “increase trade” between both nations while specifying that, in the past, the commercial exchange reached 6 billion dollars, “and today it is less than two billion dollars”.

Maduro stated that, in conversation with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, they agreed to take trade “back to its maximum level, commercial exchange, opening possibilities to Venezuelan markets”.

“We have been working in detail on the exportable offer of Venezuela, of all the states, of the governorships (regional governments), so we are going to revitalize trade, which is a fundamental element”, he pointed out.

Likewise, the President informed in a televised speech that the two neighboring nations would address issues related to the agro-industry development “from the transfer of technology and the arrival of (Brazilian) investors for the production of food and the recovery of industries”.

Finally, the President celebrated the military cooperation agreed upon by both nations, which share an extensive border: “Cooperation returns so that the border may be a space of peace, prosperity and coexistence”, he highlighted.

Venezuela and Brazil kept their political relations suspended from 2019 until the beginning of this year. The rapprochement between the two nations has occurred since the progressive Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva assumed power.

Maduro and Lula met a few hours ago in Brasilia. They discussed regional and bilateral issues with a view to the creation of mechanisms favorable to the peoples of both countries and South America.
