Riverine Rendezvous: Three Nations Unite in Amazon Warfare

This year, the Amazon basin will once again be the backdrop for a significant military event: the BraColPer Ouro exercise.

Involving Peru, Brazil, and Colombia, this multinational riverine warfare drill celebrates its 50th anniversary, reflecting a longstanding tradition of regional military cooperation.

Scheduled from July 17 to September 9, the exercise is not merely routine; it is a demonstration of enhanced security, improved operational tactics, and fortified alliances.

The BraColPer Ouro kicks off in Leticia, Colombia. Forces from the three nations will undertake a trinational amphibious assault from July 17 to 24.

This phase will showcase a diverse set of military skills, including parachute jumps, marine insertions, and riverine assaults, highlighting the specialized nature of riverine operations.

The action shifts to Iquitos, Peru, from July 25 to August 2 for the second phase. Here, the focus is on river control.

Operations include deploying special operators via a Peruvian Navy Mil Mi-8T helicopter and simulating interventions on uncooperative vessels.

This is a critical component for maintaining control in the tri-border region. The final phase, set in Manaus, Brazil, from August 27 to September 9, is dedicated to strategic deterrence.

It involves a series of maneuvers designed to enhance interoperability and effectiveness in real combat scenarios. This ensures the preparedness of the forces.

Enhancing Naval Cooperation in the Amazon Region

The exercise is comprehensive, covering areas such as Command and Control, Tactical Maneuvers, Anti-Air Warfare, Special Operations, and Air Operations.

It also includes Firing Drills, Cyber Defense, and Amphibious Riverine Operations. Such extensive training is vital as it ensures that each nation’s navy can operate seamlessly with the others.

This cooperation is crucial for maintaining security in a region as geopolitically sensitive as the Amazon.

Originating in 1974 with the Brazilian patrol vessel “Pedro Teixeira” arriving in the Amazon towns of Iquitos and Leticia, BraColPer Ouro was envisioned as a platform for joint military operations.

It has since been an annual, uninterrupted event, fostering a spirit of cooperation and readiness among the participating countries.

The continued involvement of vessels like the BAP ‘Ucayali,’ which participated in the first exercises and remains active, underscores the commitment of these nations.
