France Deploys Rafale Jets in French Guiana to Secure Space Center

Three Dassault Rafale jets soared from Saint-Dizier, France, to French Guiana as Europe prepared to launch its first Ariane 6 rocket.

Stationed at Air Base 367 Capitaine François Massé in Cayenne, these jets enhanced the security for the event on July 9. Together with the existing fleet, they formed a formidable aerial shield.

Dubbed Operation Titan, this strategic deployment involved over 300 military personnel to safeguard the Guiana Space Center.

On the ground, army patrols maneuvered with BAE Systems Bv 206 carriers and positioned MBDA Mistral missile launchers.

Meanwhile, maritime security was upheld by two National Navy patrol boats, including La Résolue (P734). They were supplemented by a Maritime Gendarmerie boat.

Helicopters from the Air and Space Force, including Airbus Puma and Fennec, shared air patrol duties with the Rafales, ensuring comprehensive coverage.

This tight security network underscored the launch’s significance, marking a pivotal moment in European space endeavors.

Bridging Military and Space Exploration

The Ariane 6 rocket, a brainchild of the European Space Agency (ESA) and Ariane Group, promises enhanced payload capabilities. It also boasts adaptability for diverse missions.

Originating from the Guiana Space Centre, operational since December 1979, this center is Europe’s primary spaceport, managed by France’s CNES and ESA.

The Armed Forces in French Guiana, commanded by Air Division General Marc Le Bouil since August 2023, played a critical role in this operation.

With over 2,000 military personnel and 200 civilians, this force boasts significant assets. These include the 9th Marine Infantry Regiment and the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment.

Strategic locations such as the Naval Base at Dégrad des Cannes and Air Base 367 also play pivotal roles.

The naval base houses four patrol boats. The air base permanently hosts an Airbus C235 transport aircraft and five helicopters.

This military infrastructure not only supports local operations but also serves as a critical component in global space exploration efforts.
