Wednesday is when the Rio de Janeiro nightlife circuit reaches full power — and tonight the Blue Note Rio delivers the third instalment of Cine Jazz, turning from Miles Davis to John Coltrane. The screening is “John Coltrane / Dusseldorf (1960)” — a concert film from the period when Coltrane was on the cusp of his most radical transformation, after leaving Miles Davis’s quintet and before the spiritual explorations of A Love Supreme (1964) and the free jazz of Ascension (1965). The 1960 Dusseldorf performance captures Coltrane at the moment of the “sheets of sound” — the torrential cascades of notes that were redefining what was possible on the saxophone. The screening is followed by a conversation and performance from Jorge Continentino — one of Brazil’s most respected saxophonists and flautists, whose work spans jazz, Brazilian instrumental music, and world music. Continentino has collaborated with Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, and the Orquestra Jazz Sinfônica, and his approach to the saxophone carries the same restless searching that defined Coltrane’s career.
