A Centro-to-Jardim Botânico Day

Start at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB) on Rua Primeiro de Março. It opens 9 am to 8 pm and entry is free — exactly right for a Friday when you have time to linger over the rotating installations without spending a real.

Friday night belongs to Botafogo’s bar strip. Rua Nelson Mandela and Rua Paulo Barreto fill with expats and locals crowding tables on the pavement — no live music tonight, but the volume of talk does the work.
