Peso Surge Deepens As USD/MXN Cracks 17.12, While Mexico Stocks Stay Hot

By · January 29, 2026 · 3 min read

Key Points

  • USD/MXN traded near 17.12 after printing 17.097, keeping the downtrend firmly in control.
  • Momentum is extreme on the daily chart, raising bounce risk even as sellers dominate.
  • Mexico’s IPC rose toward 69,960, with overbought readings signaling strength and crowding.

The peso extended its advance on Thursday as USD/MXN hovered around 17.12 in early trade, after touching 17.097. The slide kept the market’s focus on one question: is this a clean trend driven by fundamentals, or a crowded position waiting for a catalyst.

The short answer is both. Mexico continues to benefit from policy signals that investors can model and trust. A cautious central bank, a preference for stability, and limited appetite for ad-hoc intervention remain powerful magnets for capital.

Traders are still quick to punish ideas that look like price controls, forced credit, or fiscal shortcuts. The technical picture shows why the move is hard to fade.

On the daily chart, USD/MXN closed near 17.1159 after another lower day. The daily RSI sat near 17.6, an unusually oversold reading that often precedes sharp countertrend bounces. But it is not, by itself, a reversal signal.

The four-hour chart hints at a pause, not a turn. RSI was around 27.6 and price action flattened after the latest leg lower. Even so, the broader structure remains a series of lower highs and lower lows.

Key levels are clear. Support sits around 17.10 and 17.05, with 17.00 as the psychological marker below. Resistance starts near 17.18–17.23, then 17.29–17.30.

A rebound that fails under those bands would still fit the existing trend. Mexico equities told a more optimistic story. The IPC traded near 69,960, up about 1.6 on the daily view.

Momentum is elevated, with RSI around 76.6 on the daily chart and about 73.8 on the weekly chart. That reflects confidence, yet it also increases the risk of fast pullbacks on any global risk shock.

Top Winners

  • Peso carry strategies and MXN long positioning.
  • Mexico importers and companies with dollar costs.
  • Domestic banks if easing stays gradual and predictable.
  • Equity momentum traders riding the IPC trend.
  • Dip buyers in USD/MXN when liquidity is thin.

Top Losers

  • Dollar longs and late hedgers chasing the move.
  • Exporters facing translation pressure from a stronger peso.
  • High-beta stocks if overbought conditions unwind.
  • Short-volatility trades if a bounce turns violent.
  • Policy-sensitive assets when intervention rumors resurface.
