Peru confirms that modernization of BAP Chipana submarine will be completed this year

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Peruvian Ministry of Defense has confirmed that SIMA Peru will deliver the modernized BAP Chipana attack submarine to the Peruvian Navy in 2022. The Callao Naval Air Base renovation will also be completed this year.

In a press conference, the Minister of Defense, Juan Carrasco Millones, also confirmed that this year will see the launching of the second multipurpose vessel being built by SIMA Callao, which will be christened BAP Paita; that two maritime interdiction patrol boats will be delivered; and that two Itinerant Social Action Platforms (PIAS) will be built, which will be christened BAP Río Ucayali I and BAP Río Ucayali II.

Most of the announcements made by Minister Carrasco were reported months ago by Infodefensa in an interview with SIMA Peru executives at the important Sitdef 2021 fair.

ARMY AND AIR FORCE

Regarding the Peruvian Army, Carrasco revealed that eight Engineering Battalions and six Rural Settlement Military Units (UMAR) would be equipped, 21 military tanker trucks would be purchased, and SIMA Peru would deliver two river motorboats.

Through an agreement with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the Army Engineering Battalions will be in charge of the construction of ten bridges and the improvement of nine land roads through agreements with various local and regional governments.

For the Peruvian Air Force, Carrasco confirmed that two light airplanes would be acquired this year, the purchase of which will be financed with resources from the Defense Fund and a military transport plane. In addition, a 3D surveillance radar, cyber defense equipment, and satellite communication systems will be purchased.
