Nine-Year-Old Dies in Favela Fire in East Zone of São Paulo

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A nine-year-old child died in a fire in the Chaparral favela, in Penha (eastern part of São Paulo), on Saturday morning, August 29th. Approximately 50 shanties were destroyed by the fire and the overpass is closed.

According to the Fire Department, the fire broke out at around 7:30 AM. Sixteen vehicles were deployed to the community, under the General Milton Tavares de Souza overpass. The flames were under control at around 9 AM.

According to CET (Traffic Engineering Company), the access from Marginal Tietê to the Milton Tavares de Souza overpass, which connects to Governador Carvalho Pinto Avenue, is blocked.

According to the City Hall, under the management of Bruno Covas, the Secretary of Assistance and Social Development was called in to assist the affected families and is awaiting for clearance of the site to accommodate the families.

The Penha subprefecture also had a team on site to provide the required support in the cleaning efforts.

According to the city hall, a team of engineers was waiting for the area to be cleared by the firemen to assess potential damage to the overpass.

The causes of the fire and the death of the child will be investigated by the Civil Police. The case was registered at the 10th District Police Station (Penha).
