Mexican Peso Faces Headwinds as Banxico’s Monetary Policy Announcement Looms

The Mexican peso retreated against the US dollar on Thursday morning. This shift comes as the greenback strengthens and local markets await the Bank of Mexico’s (Banxico) monetary policy announcement.

The spot exchange rate stood at 20.5752 pesos per dollar. Compared to Wednesday’s official Banxico closing rate of 20.5149, this represents a loss of 6.03 cents or 0.29 percent for the peso.

The dollar price fluctuated between a high of 20.6795 and a low of 20.5129. The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the US currency against six others, rose 0.38% to 106.88 points.

Markets digested new US producer price data on Thursday morning. The index increased 0.2% monthly in October, meeting expectations. Over the 12 months ending in October, it climbed 2.4%, reaching its highest level in four months.

Recent US inflation figures suggest the Federal Reserve‘s battle against rising prices may continue longer than anticipated. Investors eagerly await comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell later today.

U.S. and Mexico Economic Updates

In other economic news, new unemployment claims fell by 4,000 to 217,000 for the week ending November 9. This marks the lowest level since May, surpassing analysts’ predictions of a 1,000 decrease to 220,000.

On the domestic front, investors are keenly watching Banxico‘s monetary policy announcement. The central bank is expected to lower its interest rate by 25 basis points.

In addition, the focus will be on the content and tone of the subsequent statement. Vector Analysis suggests the press release will maintain a dovish stance, supporting rate cuts.

They do not rule out discussions of a larger cut, potentially materializing in the December meeting. This approach reflects a careful balance between economic growth and inflation control.
