The Dominican Republic delivered a World Baseball Classic masterclass in Miami on Friday, mercy-ruling Korea 10-0 behind Cristopher Sanchez’s eight-strikeout gem and Austin Wells’ walk-off three-run homer — setting up a blockbuster semifinal against a United States side that survived Canada 5-3 in Houston. Dominican Republic Obliterate Korea in WBC Quarterfinal Rout

Baseball

The Dominican Republic’s offense continued its historic tear at the 2026 World Baseball Classic, demolishing Korea 10-0 in a seven-inning mercy-rule victory at loanDepot Park in Miami. Cristopher Sanchez — the Phillies’ 2025 NL Cy Young runner-up — was magnificent on the mound, striking out eight batters across five shutout innings on just two hits, bouncing back from a rough pool-play outing against Nicaragua.

The scoring began in the second inning when Junior Caminero’s double drove in Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who punctuated the play with a spectacular headfirst Superman dive to avoid the tag at home plate. Julio Rodriguez grounded in the second run and Fernando Tatis Jr. singled home a third to chase Korean starter Hyun-Jin Ryu after just 1.2 innings. In the third, Guerrero doubled in another run and Manny Machado singled in a fifth before two bases-loaded walks pushed the lead to 7-0. Austin Wells sealed it in the seventh with a booming three-run homer off the second-deck facade, invoking the mercy rule and sending 30,805 fans into the Miami night.

The DR has now scored 51 runs through five WBC games — over 10 per contest — and their 14 home runs tie the all-time single-tournament record. They face the United States in Sunday’s semifinal at loanDepot Park, with Paul Skenes expected to start for the Americans.

KEY STAT
The Dominican Republic has averaged 10.2 runs per game through five WBC matches — the highest run-scoring rate by any team in a single World Baseball Classic tournament.

United States Edge Canada 5-3 to Set Up DR Semifinal

Baseball

Team USA survived a scare from Canada at Daikin Park in Houston, holding on for a 5-3 victory to advance to the WBC semifinals. Kyle Schwarber’s RBI groundout opened the scoring in the first, and Alex Bregman’s single plus an Abraham Toro throwing error made it 3-0 in the third. Brice Turang and Pete Crow-Armstrong added back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth for a 5-0 cushion.

Canada fought back through Tyler Black’s RBI single and Bo Naylor’s two-run homer, cutting the deficit to 5-3 and loading the bases in the seventh before David Bednar induced a popup. Mason Miller then struck out the side in the ninth to seal the win before 38,054 fans. The stage is now set for the tournament’s biggest game: USA vs. the Dominican Republic on Sunday night in Miami.

KEY STAT
Canada’s pitching staff held Team USA’s All-Star-laden lineup to zero home runs — minor-league relievers Micah Ashman and Matt Wilkinson were particularly effective in keeping the Americans in check.

Coudet Debuts at River With Chaotic 2-1 Win at Huracan

Coudet Debuts at River With Chaotic 2-1 Win at Huracan

Football

Eduardo Coudet’s first match in charge of River Plate was everything the Chacho is known for: intense, chaotic and ultimately victorious. River beat Huracan 2-1 at the Tomas Adolfo Duco in a Fecha 10 clash that featured three penalties, two expulsions and relentless drama under the floodlights of Parque Patricios.

Sebastian Driussi opened the scoring on 27 minutes with a towering header after a pinpoint Gonzalo Montiel cross from the right. Huracan equalized through a Jordy Caicedo penalty after a contentious foul call just before half-time. In the second half, Juanfer Quintero — brought on specifically to take a spot-kick — had his penalty saved by Hernan Galindez. Then came the decisive sequence: a VAR review found a handball, referee Nicolas Ramirez awarded River’s third penalty of the night and simultaneously expelled both Facundo Colidio and Lucas Carrizo for an off-the-ball altercation. Montiel stepped up and converted to seal Coudet’s debut with three points.

River (11 pts) sit in the bottom half of Zona B but the win — secured with 18-year-old Ecuadorian Kendry Paez making his first start — gives Coudet a platform to build from after replacing Marcelo Gallardo.

KEY STAT
The match produced three penalties, two red cards and five yellow cards — referee Nicolas Ramirez’s crew was pelted with objects by Huracan fans as they left the pitch after the final whistle.

Sao Paulo Seize Brasileirao Lead as Rodada 5 Wraps

Football

Brasileirao Rodada 5 concluded Thursday night with Sao Paulo emerging as the new Serie A leader on 13 points after a 2-0 victory over Chapecoense at the Caninde — the first match under new coach Roger Machado and the club’s 400th win in the points-per-game era. Luciano and Jonathan Calleri scored in the second half as the Tricolor posted their fourth win in five matches.

The evening’s other results reshaped the table: Vasco stunned Palmeiras 2-1 at Sao Januario in Renato Gaucho’s managerial debut, dropping the Verdao to second on 10 points. Fluminense moved to third (also 10 pts) after a 2-0 win at Remo, while Gremio were held to a 1-1 draw by Bragantino at the Arena in Porto Alegre. Carlos Vinicius headed Gremio ahead on six minutes from an Enamorado cross, but substitute Rodriguinho equalized with a stunning strike from the edge of the box on 65 minutes. Gremio sit ninth on seven points. At the bottom, Internacional (2 pts) and Cruzeiro (2 pts) face early-season crises after five rounds.

Full Brasileirao coverage continues with Rodada 6 this weekend, headlined by Botafogo vs. Flamengo and Santos vs. Corinthians.

KEY STAT
Sao Paulo have conceded just 2 goals in 5 matches — the best defensive record in the Brasileirao. Carlos Vinicius leads the league’s individual scoring chart with 5 goals in 5 games for Gremio.

Lanus Steal Victory at Estudiantes to Close Apertura Fecha 10

Football

Lanus snatched three precious points at the Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi, beating Estudiantes de La Plata 1-0 in the Fecha 10 closer with the only goal arriving on 74 minutes. After a cagey first half dominated by the Pincha’s possession, Lanus broke on the counter: Nahuel Losada launched the transition, Eduardo Salvio whipped a cross to the back post and Dylan Aquino met it with a sweet first-time volley that beat Fernando Muslera.

The result snapped a five-match winless run for Mauricio Pellegrino’s Recopa Sudamericana champions, who climbed to tenth in Zona A with 12 points. Estudiantes, suffering their first home defeat of the campaign, stay third on 15 points behind Velez (sole leader) and will need to regroup before visiting Gimnasia de Mendoza next Tuesday. The post-match atmosphere was ugly — the referee’s crew required a police escort after being targeted with projectiles.

KEY STAT
Nahuel Losada — Lanus’ goalkeeper and the night’s best performer — made seven saves to deny Estudiantes, who controlled 60% possession but could not find a way through.

Cordoba Double: Talleres and Belgrano Both Win in Apertura Fecha 10

Football

Thursday was a banner night for Cordoba football. At the Mario Alberto Kempes, Carlos Tevez’s Talleres defeated city rivals Instituto 2-0 in the provincial derby — Valentin Davila opened the scoring on 31 minutes after Alexandro Maidana’s header cannoned off the crossbar, and Brazilian substitute Rick sealed it with a beautifully struck counter-attack goal in the third minute of added time. The win lifts the T to sixth in Zona A on 14 points, firmly inside the playoff places heading into Sunday’s superclasico against Belgrano.

Down in Rio Cuarto, Belgrano did their part by beating Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto 1-0 through Francisco Gonzalez Metilli’s 58th-minute tap-in after goalkeeper Agustin Lastra’s clearance went horribly wrong. Ricardo Zielinski’s side — who rested several regulars with one eye on the derby — now sit atop Zona B on 19 points, three clear of Independiente Rivadavia. The Cordoba superclasico on Sunday (17:30 local) is now a summit meeting in all but name.

KEY STAT
Belgrano have won 6 of their 9 Apertura matches — the best win rate of any team across both zones. They have conceded just 6 goals, second only to Velez (5) in the entire league.

Independiente Medellin Clinch Final Libertadores Group-Stage Berth

Football

Independiente Medellin secured the final available place in the Copa Libertadores 2026 group stage, beating Uruguay’s Juventud 2-1 at the Atanasio Girardot on Thursday night to advance 3-2 on aggregate. Hayen Palacios broke through on 14 minutes with a clever headed finish from a Fydriszewski cross, but Federico Barrandeguy equalized for Juventud with a thunderous free-kick on 25 minutes.

Juventud were reduced to nine men through injury and expulsion (Ramiro Peralta, red card in the 90th minute), and Argentine forward Francisco Fydriszewski — El Polaco — headed the decisive goal in the 82nd minute, dedicating it to his mother who is undergoing cancer treatment. The result completes the Libertadores field of 32 ahead of the group-stage draw on March 19. Juventud drops to the Copa Sudamericana group stage.

KEY STAT
This is Medellin’s 11th Copa Libertadores appearance. Colombia now has four clubs in the group stage: Atletico Nacional, Junior, Deportes Tolima and Independiente Medellin.

Calderano Survives Marathon Set to Reach WTT Chongqing Quarterfinals

Table Tennis

Brazil’s Hugo Calderano — world No. 4 and the highest-ranked player from the Americas in table tennis history — advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTT Champions Chongqing with a 3-1 victory over Croatia’s Tomislav Pucar (world No. 30). The parcials of 11-9, 7-11, 11-3 and 19-17 tell the story of a match that nearly slipped away: Calderano held four set points at 10-6 in the fourth set before Pucar clawed back to force extended play, but the Brazilian’s nerve held in a dramatic 19-17 finish.

Saturday’s quarterfinal pits Calderano against France’s Felix Lebrun (world No. 6) in a rivalry that has become one of the sport’s most compelling. The 19-year-old Frenchman eliminated Calderano en route to the Olympic bronze in Paris 2024, though the Brazilian avenged that defeat at the WTT Star Contender in Ljubljana. The match is scheduled for Saturday at 09:15 BRT.

KEY STAT
Calderano reached world No. 2 in February 2026 — the first player from outside Asia and Europe ever to achieve that ranking. He is chasing his first WTT Champions title after finishing runner-up in Incheon (2024) and Macau (2025).

Apertura Roundup: Belgrano Top, Velez Hold Zona A Lead

Football

Fecha 10 of the Argentine Apertura produced 14 matches across four days, with the final results solidifying the playoff picture. In Zona A, Velez remain atop with 19 points after their earlier 1-1 draw with Tigre, followed by Estudiantes LP (15) and Independiente (14). Talleres’ win over Instituto vaults them to sixth (14). Deportivo Riestra’s 0-0 draw with Gimnasia de Mendoza leaves them anchored to the bottom on 6 points.

In Zona B, Belgrano’s win puts them clear at the summit on 19 points, three ahead of Independiente Rivadavia (16 from 9 games). River’s Coudet-era victory pushes them to 11 points. Defensa y Justicia drew 1-1 with Central Cordoba through an Elias Pereyra opener and a Michael Santos penalty equalizer. Fecha 11 kicks off Saturday with Platense vs. Velez (19:00) and continues through Tuesday, highlighted by the Cordoba superclasico Belgrano vs. Talleres on Sunday and Boca’s trip to Union on Sunday night.

KEY STAT
Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto have lost 7 of their 9 Apertura matches — the worst record in the entire 30-team competition — and sit last in Zona B with just 5 points.
