Our report on the election writ of 3 October covered the dissolution of Parliament and the date of the vote. This guide covers the next steps, from a voter-list check that opened on Tuesday 13 October to the questions still open.

Grenada Elections 2026 Timeline at a Glance

Grenada is a small eastern Caribbean nation made up of three islands, Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. It is a parliamentary democracy, and King Charles III is represented there by Governor-General Dame Cécile La Grenade.

The governor-general dissolved Parliament on Friday 2 October on the advice of Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell and issued the election writs the same day. The Supervisor of Elections said the writ reached his office at 3:45 pm that day.

Under the Government Gazette notice of 2 October, polling day in the Grenada elections 2026 must fall between 15 and 21 days after nomination day. Thursday 5 November is the 21st day, the latest date that rule allows.

Nomination Day on Thursday 15 October

Nomination day is when each candidate formally files papers with the returning officer, the official who runs the vote in a constituency. The Government Gazette, the state’s official notice sheet, set it for Thursday 15 October in a notice dated 2 October.

Constituency offices accept nominations from 9:00 am to 12 noon that day, after which the full field for the Grenada elections 2026 is set. Mitchell’s National Democratic Congress already presented its 15 candidates at a campaign launch in St Mark on Sunday 4 October.

Each constituency elects one member, so 15 seats are at stake and a party needs eight to govern. Returning officers work from offices across the islands, from Hillsborough on Carriacou to Sauteurs in the north and Grenville in the east.

Voter List Checks Until 21 October

Voter registration for the Grenada elections 2026 closed when the writ was issued, the Parliamentary Elections Office said. It stays suspended until the vote is over, so no new names can be added before 5 November.

On Tuesday 13 October the office opened the addendum list of electors as at 30 September for public inspection. It matters most for people who registered between July and September 2026, and claims and objections run from 13 to 21 October.

Corrections to a name, address or polling division must reach the constituency’s registration officer by Wednesday 21 October. Voters can also check their status at peogrenada.org, the elections office website, or on printed lists at constituency offices, post offices and police stations.

The Government Gazette of Monday 5 October also published a Special Polling Day Notice for 2026 and a Special Ballot Paper Order. Police officers customarily vote early, and in 2022 their advance poll was set for Monday 20 June, three days before the 23 June vote.

Who Is Running

Mitchell, a lawyer, leads the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into the Grenada elections 2026, his second general election as party leader. The party won nine of the 15 seats in June 2022, ending the New National Party’s time in government.

Emmalin Pierre leads the New National Party (NNP), the main opposition, and will be the first woman to take it into a general election. She succeeded Keith Mitchell, the party’s longtime leader and a former prime minister who is not related to the current one.

Keith Mitchell left active politics after 42 years as member for St George North West, telling Parliament that no one voted him out. A third party, the Democratic People’s Movement, was founded by former foreign minister Peter David and is also expected to field candidates.

The NNP scheduled a rally at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium in St George’s for Sunday 11 October, according to a police traffic notice. Mitchell has told supporters that some want a clean sweep of all 15 seats, a result only the NNP has achieved, three times.

A Court Claim and a Budget on Hold

A claim in the High Court of Grenada challenges certain aspects of the electoral process, the Attorney General’s office said on 8 October. The office has hired outside lawyers led by Dr Francis Alexis KC, a senior barrister, to represent the defendants.

Attorney General Claudette Joseph’s office says it is satisfied that the election is being run under the Constitution and the laws of Grenada. It describes its aim as a fair, transparent and orderly process.

Government finances are also waiting on the result of the Grenada elections 2026. Finance ministry permanent secretary Mike Sylvester said technical work on the 2027 budget continues, but the next steps depend on the outcome of the election.

Political commentator Christopher De Allie told NOW Grenada that a budget is normally presented before year-end so ministries can spend from January. The 2025 budget came only in March 2025, a delay the government linked to Hurricane Beryl.

What It Means for US Readers

For visitors, the campaign mostly shows up as rallies and road closures around big events in St George’s and the parishes. The police publish traffic notices before major rallies, as they did for the NNP event planned for 11 October.

Travellers arriving around polling day in the Grenada elections 2026 should expect crowds near polling stations and party gatherings once results come in. Grenada’s currency, the Eastern Caribbean dollar, is fixed at 2.70 per US dollar, so the exchange rate does not move with the campaign.

For investors and people moving to Grenada, the dates to watch are the 2027 budget and the first policy steps of whichever party wins. Our step-by-step guide to moving to Grenada explains residence and paperwork for newcomers.

What Is Not Known

The final list of candidates for the Grenada elections 2026 will be clear only after nominations close at noon on 15 October. Caribbean National Weekly reported that more guidance on polling stations and voting procedures is expected from the elections office.

The Attorney General’s office has not named the claimant or a hearing date in the High Court case. The timing of the 2027 budget depends on who forms the next government, and how quickly.
