Going to the Movies in Rio this Easter Weekend: Daily

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Movie theaters in Rio de Janeiro are offering a wide range of options for movie buffs of all ages during this holiday weekend. In keeping with the spirit of Easter weekend, cinemas are screening a number of religious titles.

Perhaps one of the most on topic films this weekend is “Son of God” (“Filho de Deus” in Portuguese), an American Biblical drama portraying the life of Jesus, from his birth to his resurrection.

Also out in Rio cinemas, “Noah” (“Noé” in Portuguese) is a film staring Russell Crow about the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. Noah receives specific instructions from God to build an Ark to save all of God’s creations and himself from the impending flood.

“Divergent” is an American Science fiction action film set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic world set in Chicago, where people are divided into groups based on virtues, but things take a dramatic turn when the film’s leading lady does not appear to fit into these categories.

“Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier” (“Capitão América 2 – O soldado Invernal”) is a sequel to the 2011 film, “Captain America: The First Avenger.” This first blockbuster film of the season, which boasts high ratings on film-centered website, IMBD, (8.3/10) and movie ratings site, Rotten Tomatoes, (89 percent), is likely to be a safe bet.

For those who want to get some laughs and are already familiar with Brazilian films, “Copa de Elite” is a Brazilian satire of various films, such as “Se Eu Fosse Você,” “Tropa de Elite,” “Chico Xavier,” “Bruna Surfistinha” and “Minha Mãe é uma Peça,” with a focus on the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

“Julio Sumiu” (“Julio Disappeared”) is a Brazilian comedy that captures the adventures of a mother who is on the lookout for her missing son. In her desperate attempt to find him, she gets involved with drug traffickers and a corrupt police force.

For kids and the young at heart, “Rio 2,” a sequel to the first “Rio” film set in the Cidade Maravilhosa, is a family-friendly animated film starring Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway. This time, the crew heads to the Amazon.
