In a letter addressed to President Lasso, Holguín indicated that the decision was due to personal reasons.
“I have executed the mandate he gave me to serve Ecuador, always acting justly and in law, to safeguard the high interests of the State permanently,” Holguín said in the letter, published through his account on the same social network.
At the same time, he celebrated “the successful appointment of Gustavo Manrique” as his successor.
Holguín, a businessman linked to the ruling Creando Oportunidades (CREO) movement, led by Lasso himself, has held the post of foreign minister since January 2022 after serving as ad-honorem ambassador-at-large for strategic issues.
Under that position, Holguín led what was called the “diplomacy of vaccines”, through which the South American country obtained biologicals to immunize the population against COVID-19.
