Colombia’s incoming government has named the man who will run its finances, and it is the clearest signal yet of the economic course it intends to steer. President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella has picked Miguel Gómez Martínez for Hacienda, the country’s most powerful economic post.

The appointment

De la Espriella named Gómez as Minister of Hacienda y Crédito Público on June 30, his second confirmed pick after Rodrigo Lara at Interior. The choice was confirmed by the transition team and by the president-elect himself.

Gómez takes the seat from the outgoing minister, Germán Ávila, who is coordinating the handover. The transition calendar is due to be set at a meeting this week.

Who Miguel Gómez is

Gómez is a veteran economist with a long record across the public and private sectors. He has served as vice comptroller general, president of the state development bank Bancóldex, and head of both the Colombian-American Chamber of Commerce and the insurers’ association Fasecolda.

He was also Colombia’s ambassador to France, and comes from a prominent political family as a grandson of former president Laureano Gómez. Speculation that the post would go to Colombia’s first female finance minister did not materialise.

What the pick signals

Gómez’s opening remarks pointed to an orthodox, market-friendly line. He pledged to respect the independence of the Banco de la República and to prioritise controlling public debt, which he warned is the highest in the country’s history.

Markets read it as reassuring, and the peso firmed on the news. For a government that campaigned on a business-friendly platform, the appointment sets a clear economic tone.

What it means for foreign residents

For expats and digital nomads, nothing changes on the strength of a cabinet pick, and no rule shifts before the August 7 inauguration. The Hacienda chair, though, drives the policies that matter most to foreigners’ wallets.

That includes income and property taxes, VAT, and the 2027 budget, all of which run through the finance ministry. A market-friendly minister suggests continuity rather than sudden change, but the detail will come with the government’s first budget.

The cabinet still to come

With interior and finance filled, the most-watched remaining seats are defense and foreign affairs. Names beyond Lara and Gómez circulating in the press remain speculation until they are formally announced.

The handover from the Petro government is under way, with the vice-president-elect leading the incoming side. The full shape of the cabinet should become clear in the weeks before inauguration.
