By mid-2022, Brazil installed 2.7 GW of photovoltaics, more than in 2019

The Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (Absolar) reports that the 16,414 MW of installed photovoltaic capacity represents 8.1% of the country’s total electricity matrix, behind only hydro, which accounts for 53.9%, and wind, with 10.8%.

A relevant fact is that the 11,315 MW of distributed generation – 99.9% of them from photovoltaic sources – belong to 1,073,240 systems, the vast majority of which – almost 840,000 (78.2%) – are residential, a sector that also leads in installed capacity, with 5,285 MW (46.7%).

In second place in both items are commercial systems, which account for almost 130 thousand (12%), with an installed capacity of just over 3,500 MW (31.4%).

According to Absolar, several records have been reached regarding power generation this year. One is the daily average, on January 14, with an average of 1,637 MW serving 2.2% of the country’s electricity demand.

The daily maximum was achieved on April 25, when at 10 o’clock that day, 3,948 MW covered the equivalent of 5% of the national demand. In June, 2.1% of Brazil’s electricity supply was generated by photovoltaic sources.

An interesting fact is the composition of the sector’s production chain, based on the companies listed under the Special Agency for Industrial Financing (FINAME), the certification of the degree of nationalization of components required for companies to access the financing conditions offered by the Brazilian National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).

Thus, there are 82 manufacturers of solar photovoltaic system kits, ten inverters, eight solar trackers, eight modules, three batteries, and one string box.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that the state with the most photovoltaic activity in distributed generation is Minas Geraes, which has installed almost 1.9 GW (16.2% of the total), followed by São Paulo, with 1.5 GW (13.2%), and Rio Grande do Sul, 1.3 GW (11.6%).

Minas Gerais also has the largest capacity under construction, 2,646 MW, followed by Bahia (692 MW) and Pernambuco (551 MW).

So far, Bahia has the largest installed solar power capacity in operation (1,356 MW), followed by Piauí (1,163 MW) and Minas Gerais (730 MW).
