Brazilian President Says His Country Must Seek “Reliable Electoral System”

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro said on Thursday that to prevent what occurs in “other countries”, Brazil must seek a “reliable electoral system”, with printed voting rather than electronic voting as is currently established, in preparation for the 2022 elections in which he will seek reelection.

“We have advanced the study considerably. We hope that next year it will be thoroughly studied in the Chamber and in the Senate, so that we may have a truly reliable electoral system in 2022,” said the head of state in his weekly broadcast on social media.

Bolsonaro declared that he is in favor of the Proposed Constitutional Amendment (PEC) of allied deputy Bia Kicis that advocates the return to the country of the printed vote in replacement of the electronic form.

“It’s the way one actually audits and counts the votes,” said Bolsonaro, with no mention of which “other countries” he was referring to.

The Brazilian President, a strong ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, did not comment on the complex outcome of the elections in the United States, which point to the victory of Democrat Joe Biden, although the day before he said he was confident in a “turnaround” for the Republican leader.

Just this Thursday, Trump challenged the integrity of the country’s electoral system, with no evidence, calling into question the legality of millions of votes and paving the way for a lengthy dispute over the outcome of the U.S. election.

In a similar accusation and also lacking proof, Bolsonaro said in March that based on the “evidence” he had “in his hands,” and which he has so far failed to produce, he would show that in 2018 he was elected in the first round, but because of an alleged “fraud”, he had to run in the second round against leftist Fernando Haddad.

On another front, in his weekly Facebook stream, Bolsonaro suggested the “federalization” of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, which is currently administered by the government of the state of Pernambuco.

According to Bolsonaro, the federal government intends to convert the 21 islands into a “tourist center”, with sport fishing activities and authorization for large-scale cruises, activities that are currently banned by the archipelago’s administration as a means of preserving the ecosystem.
