Bahia totals 163 municipalities in a state of emergency due to floods

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Bahia has reached 163 municipalities with declared emergency situations due to floods in several regions of the state, said on Wednesday, January 5, the Superintendence of Protection and Civil Defense (SUDEC).

The last six cities to declare an emergency situation were Aiquara, Barro Alto, Bom Jesus da Serra, Brumado, Itamari and Nova Itarana.

There are 26 deaths and 520 injured, in addition to 28,224 homeless and 73,032 displaced. The total number of people affected reaches 815,597. The data relate to occurrences registered in 174 municipalities.

The deaths resulting from the heavy rains occurred in Amargosa (2), Itaberaba (2), Itamaraju (4), Jucuruçu (3), Macarani (1), Prado (2), Ruy Barbosa (1), Itapetinga (1), Ilhéus (3), Aurelino Leal (1), Itabuna (2), São Félix do Coribe (2), Ubaitaba (1) and Belo Campo (1).
