Brazilian Justice says it completed analysis of January 8 attacks and keeps 294 detainees in prison

The Brazilian Justice said it finished analyzing the requests for freedom of the prisoners for the anti-democratic acts of January 8, with a balance of more than 1,100 people released after having been arrested, while 294 remain in prison.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre Moraes, in charge of the case, finished this Thursday the analysis of all the requests for release received after the events.

Of the 1,400 people arrested, 294 (86 women and 208 men) remain in the Federal District prison system.

The others were released because they no longer represented a risk to society and the investigations.

The last analysis of the requests for freedom presented to the Supreme Court concluded this Thursday with the release of another 129 prisoners, who were granted provisional freedom.

All of them must comply with the following preventive measures: use of electronic anklets; obligation to report weekly to Justice; prohibition to leaving the country, having to surrender the passport to Justice; suspension of gun permits for hunters, shooters, and collectors; prohibition to use social networks and ban on communication with other investigated persons.

The defendants who remained in prison are responsible for the instigation of a crime, instigation of the animosity of the Armed Forces against democratic institutions, criminal association, aggravated damage, abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, and coup d’état.

Since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was elected in the second round in October 2022, thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, dissatisfied with the election results, have been calling for a military coup to overthrow the democratically elected government.

Demonstrations in the last months of 2022 included encampments in several headquarters in the country and culminated with the invasion and depredation of the Three Powers buildings on January 8 of this year.
