Brazil: Lula to board for G7 summit – president to have bilateral meetings with Japan, India, and Indonesia

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) embarks on Wednesday, May 17, and is expected to arrive in Hiroshima on Friday, May 19.

His return is scheduled for Sunday evening, the 21st.

The president will have at least three bilateral meetings during his passage through the G7 summit this weekend.

Schedules with the president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, and the prime ministers of India, Narendra Modi, and Japan, host Fumio Kishida, are set, but with no exact dates.

Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida invited Lula by phone to attend this year’s G7.

The two will meet a few days after the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, participates in the Financial G7 in Niigata, Japan, and receives the demand of local business people for a commercial agreement between the Asian country and Mercosur.

Regarding the bilaterals with Indonesia and India, the main topic should be the G20.

In December, India will hand over the group’s presidency to Brazil.

Before India, the presidency was with Indonesia.

The meetings should also address the different issues on the international agenda from the perspective of developing countries.

LULA’S SCHEDULE AT THE G7

In the official program of the G7, Lula will participate in three panels.

The first one, on Saturday, at 3 pm local time (3 am Brasília time), is called “Working together to avoid multiple crises.”

There will be the official photo and then, at 5:20 pm, a panel on joint efforts towards sustainability.

Sunday will begin with a visit by the G7 leaders to the memorial to the victims of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in World War II.

At 9:30 am, there will be the only panel of the day: “Towards a Prosperous, Stable and Peaceful World.”

The G7 ends with the publication of two joint communiqués.

One of them is signed only by the member countries of the bloc.

The other is also with the invited countries.

In addition to Brazil, Australia, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Vietnam, Comoros, and the Cook Islands participate in this year’s G7 as guests.
