100 richest agribusiness municipalities in Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The list of the 100 richest agribusiness municipalities in Brazil was released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (Mapa). The ranking was based on data from the Municipal Agricultural Production (PAM) for 2020, raised by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), and released in October 2020.
Based on this information, a classification was made considering the production value of temporary and permanent crops and the Gross Domestic Product of the Municipalities (GDP) based on 2019.
According to the note from the Ministry of Agriculture, the IBGE data highlights the production of soybeans, corn, cotton, coffee, and sugar cane.
In the reference year for the survey, the value of agricultural production of the ranked municipalities was R$151.2 (US$26.5) billion, equivalent to 32% of the total value, which was R$470.5 billion.
Most of the wealthiest municipalities are in Mato Grosso (MT), where 35 are on the list. They are followed by Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) with 13, Goiás (GO) with 10, Bahia (BA) with 9, Minas Gerais (MG) with 8 and São Paulo (SP) with 6.
The remaining municipalities are located in Pernambuco (1), Maranhão (2), Pará (4), Brasília (1), Piauí (2), Paraná (4), Tocantins (1) and Rio Grande do Sul (2).

SORRISO (MT)
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, one of the leading national producers of grains, the municipality leads the national ranking. In 2020, it added R$ 5.3 billion in production value and also held the highest GDP on the list. According to IBGE, agriculture and cattle-raising represent 26.5% of the municipality’s R$ 6.2 million GDP.
SÃO DESIDERIO (BA)
The second-largest national producer of cotton, the municipality of São Desidério is the second richest in the national agribusiness, with a production value of R$ 4.6 billion. Cotton farming concentrated 38.3% of the value of production in 2020. The municipality’s GDP in 2019 was R$2.596 billion
SAPEZAL (MT)
The national leader in cotton production, Sapezal (MT), has more than half (54.4%) of the R$ 4.3 billion produced in 2020 come from the crop. The municipality is also prominent in soybean production, which accounted for 35.5% of the 2020 revenue. The municipality’s GDP in 2019 was R$2.59 billion.
CAMPO NOVO DO PARECIS (MT)
A national highlight in crops such as sunflower and popcorn, Campo Novo do Parecis (MT) is the fourth wealthiest municipality in Brazilian agribusiness. It accumulated about R$3.8 billion in production value in 2020 and a GDP of R$3.4 billion in 2019
FORMOSA DO RIO PRETO (BA)
The fifth most affluent municipality in Brazilian agribusiness, Formosa do Rio Preto is the largest soybean producer, third-largest cotton producer, and second-largest corn producer in Bahia. In 2020, it added a production value of R$3.74 billion. In 2019, it counted a Gross Domestic Product of R$1.852 billion.
