Bolivia’s President Deploys Security Forces to Clear Opposition Roadblocks Amid Deepening Crisis

Bolivia’s President Luis Arce has ordered the military and police to clear roadblocks set up by supporters of former President Evo Morales, escalating a political and economic crisis that has gripped the country for weeks.

This move comes after Morales’ followers blocked more than a dozen key highways, especially in the Cochabamba region, to demand the validation of Morales’ candidacy for the August 17 presidential elections.

The Constitutional Court has ruled against Morales’ eligibility, citing term limits that bar him from seeking a fourth term. The blockades have paralyzed the movement of over 800 fuel tankers and disrupted the flow of goods and people across Bolivia.

Businesses and residents have faced shortages of fuel, food, and medicine, worsening an already severe economic downturn marked by a lack of foreign currency and declining gas production.

The government accuses Morales’ supporters of trying to sabotage the elections and force President Arce’s resignation, labeling the blockades as an attack on the country’s legal and economic stability.

Security forces have used bulldozers and tear gas to dismantle barricades made of stones and logs, particularly at the Parotani bridge, a strategic point in Morales’ political stronghold.

Clashes between police and protesters have resulted in injuries and arrests. Local residents, caught in the crossfire, have displayed white flags to signal neutrality and avoid harm.

Morales, who leads the ruling MAS party, remains barricaded in Chapare. He denies organizing the blockades but claims the protests reflect widespread discontent with Arce’s government.

Morales also faces an arrest warrant on serious criminal charges, further fueling tensions. The government rejects allegations of political persecution and insists that law enforcement actions aim to restore order and protect the economy.

The crisis has exposed deep divisions within Bolivia’s ruling party and society. The confrontation between Arce and Morales, once allies, now threatens to destabilize the country further.

With the economy already strained and the general election approaching, business leaders warn that continued unrest could drive away investment and worsen shortages.

The outcome of this standoff will shape Bolivia’s political and economic future, with significant consequences for its people and regional trade.
