Aliko Dangote, one of Africa’s wealthiest and most influential businessmen, is now targeting Angola’s promising economic opportunities. The Nigerian tycoon visited Luanda on November 26, 2024, to discuss potential investments with President João Lourenço. Dangote’s interest spans multiple sectors, including the Lobito Corridor project, oil and gas, and cement production.

The Lobito Corridor stands as a cornerstone of regional development in Southern Africa. This ambitious railway project stretches 1,300 kilometers from Angola’s coast to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border. It aims to connect mineral-rich regions to global markets, fostering economic growth and trade.

Dangote’s potential involvement in the Lobito Corridor could reshape the region’s economic landscape. The project has already attracted over $1 billion in funding from various international sources. These include the U.S. government, European Commission, and African Development Bank. Their support underscores the corridor’s strategic importance.

The Nigerian businessman also expressed interest in Angola’s oil sector. He seeks to acquire and explore both onshore and offshore oil blocks. This move aligns with Dangote’s strategy to expand his empire beyond West Africa. It also presents an opportunity to tap into Angola’s vast petroleum resources.

Angola stands to benefit significantly from Dangote’s investments. The country has been working to diversify its economy beyond oil. Foreign investment in infrastructure and industry could create jobs and stimulate economic growth. It may also enhance Angola’s position in regional and global trade networks.

Dangote’s visit coincides with an upcoming trip by the U.S. President to Angola. This timing highlights the growing international interest in the country’s economic potential. It also underscores the strategic importance of the Lobito Corridor project.

US and EU Back Lobito Corridor in Central Africa

The Dangote Group’s potential entry into Angola’s cement industry could boost local production. This move might lead to increased competition and improved infrastructure development. It aligns with the group’s successful cement operations in other African countries.

Dangote’s interest in Angola reflects a broader trend of intra-African investment. This approach supports the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). It promotes economic integration and self-reliance among African nations.

The Nigerian tycoon’s track record of successful investments across various sectors bodes well for Angola. His business acumen and resources could accelerate development projects in the country. This collaboration may serve as a model for future partnerships between African business leaders and governments.
