Bosnia beat Qatar to make history

Bosnia and Herzegovina arrived in Seattle knowing only a win would do. They produced it, and with it reached the knockout rounds of a World Cup for the first time.

The Dragons led inside half an hour and never surrendered control. A late third goal turned a nervy night into a celebration.

Qatar, by contrast, ended their tournament with familiar disappointment. The 2022 hosts are still waiting for a maiden World Cup victory.

How the goals came in Seattle

Bosnia struck first in the 29th minute through the teenager Kerim Alajbegovic. It was a composed finish that settled early nerves.

The lead doubled in the 34th minute when a Qatar defender turned the ball into his own net. Suddenly Bosnia were cruising at two-nil.

Qatar found a lifeline just before the break. Captain Hassan Al-Haydos pulled one back in the 42nd minute to make it two-one.

The result was put beyond doubt late on. Substitute Ermin Mahmic finished in the 81st minute to restore the two-goal cushion at three-one.

The Rio Times numbers behind Bosnia’s breakthrough

According to FIFA’s official match centre, the win lifted Bosnia to four points and a third-place finish in Group B. That was enough to go through as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

The Rio Times notes that Bosnia advanced despite a negative goal difference of minus one. In the new 48-team format, eight of the twelve third-placed sides progress, and Bosnia did just enough.

For Qatar the figures were grim. They conceded ten goals across their three group games, having shipped six to Canada and one to Switzerland before this defeat.

Bosnia’s only previous World Cup, in Brazil in 2014, had ended in the group stage. This was the night they finally went a step further.

Qatar’s long wait for a World Cup win goes on

The defeat extended a record Qatar would rather forget. The Rio Times reviewed their World Cup history across two tournaments.

As hosts in 2022 they lost all three group matches. In 2026 they managed only a single draw, against Switzerland, alongside two defeats.

It means Qatar have still never won a match at a World Cup finals. Julen Lopetegui’s side leave the tournament bottom of Group B.

There was pride in Al-Haydos’s goal and in moments of neat passing. There was little, though, to mask the gulf in cutting edge.

From Dzeko to a teenager: Bosnia’s generational night

The night carried a neat symmetry for Bosnia. The opener came from a teenager, while the captain leading them out was the 40-year-old Edin Dzeko.

Dzeko was withdrawn after an hour, his work in shepherding the team done. The clinching goal then came from a fresh pair of legs off the bench.

Coach Sergej Barbarez has blended that experience with youth all tournament. In Seattle the mix produced the biggest result in the country’s football history.

What comes next

Bosnia will learn their last-32 opponent once the other groups settle. As a third-placed qualifier, they are likely to face one of the group winners.

For now, the achievement is the story. A nation at its second World Cup has reached uncharted ground.
