Switzerland beat Canada to seize top spot

Switzerland went into the final round of Group B level on points with Canada but behind on goal difference. They left it as group winners, thanks to a ruthless ten-minute spell after the interval.

Murat Yakin’s side had been second best for much of a cagey first half. The break changed everything.

Canada, unbeaten in the group until this point, could not respond in time. Jesse Marsch’s team pulled a goal back but never quite threatened an equaliser.

How the game turned after half-time

The match was goalless at the break, but Switzerland needed barely a minute of the second half to strike. Ruben Vargas finished off a slick move to make it one-nil.

Eleven minutes later the lead was doubled. Breel Embolo set up Johan Manzambi, whose low shot squeezed past Maxime Crepeau in the Canada goal.

Canada finally found a way through in the 76th minute. Promise David turned in a Nathan Saliba pass to halve the deficit and set up a tense finish.

The hosts pushed for a leveller but Gregor Kobel’s goal held firm. Switzerland saw out the win to claim first place.

The Rio Times numbers behind Switzerland’s win

According to FIFA’s official match centre, Switzerland finished top of Group B on seven points, with Canada second on four. Both nations are into the round of 32.

The Rio Times notes the quirk in how the group was settled. Canada carried the better goal difference, at plus five to Switzerland’s plus four, yet the head-to-head result, not goal difference, decided top spot.

The match statistics tell a story of efficiency over volume. Canada had more shots, nine to six, but Switzerland took their two best chances from an expected-goals figure of just over one.

Switzerland also enjoyed the majority of possession at around 56 percent. The Swiss have now reached the knockout rounds at five of the last six World Cups.

Canada’s historic first, even in defeat

Defeat stung, but it could not spoil a milestone. The Rio Times reviewed Canada’s World Cup record, and second place still marks new ground.

Canada had played two previous World Cups, in Mexico in 1986 and in Qatar in 2022, and lost every match they contested. This is the first time the men’s team has ever reached the knockout stage.

Their tournament had already produced a first World Cup win, the six-nil rout of Qatar. Now comes a first trip to the last 32, as co-hosts on home soil.

For a programme that has grown quickly under Marsch, the night was a lesson rather than a setback. Reaching the knockout rounds was the target, and it was met.

Switzerland’s substitutes make the difference

Yakin owed much to two men who had shaped the previous game from the bench. Vargas and Manzambi had both contributed goals in the four-one win over Bosnia.

Trusted from the start in Vancouver, they delivered again. Manzambi created the opener for Vargas, then scored the second himself.

It was a reward for a coach who has rotated cleverly through the group stage. Switzerland’s depth, rather than a single star, has carried them to first place.

What comes next

Winning the group should hand Switzerland a kinder crossover and a base on the west coast. Canada, as runners-up, face a longer trip and a tougher opponent.

Both, though, are still standing as the group stage closes. For Switzerland that is routine; for Canada it is uncharted, and welcome, territory.
