RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Vivo Open Air Cinema Tour and festival returns to Rio this month from May 15th through June 1st with film screenings and live music performances in the new location of Marina da Glória. Sixteen films including cult classics, animated features, Brazilian originals and documentaries will be shown followed by numerous parties with DJs and live Brazilian and international acts, including a special appearance by Scottish alternative rock band The Jesus and Mary Chain.
Formerly hosted at The Jockey Club in Jardim Botânico, the festival moves to Marina da Glória this year and will kick off on Thursday, May 15th with the screening of the award winning adventure documentary “Storm Surfers” at 9PM. Former bassist for Brazilian band Barão Vermelho, Rodrigo Santos and Os Lenhadores will perform following the film.
Next on Friday, May 16th, the festival will screen the 1983 cult classic “Flashdance.” Modinha! A Festa will follow that showing with DJs Chu and João Rodrigo spinning and VJ Raton providing visual projections.
The Stanley Kubrick cult classic, “A Clockwork Orange” (Laranja Mecânica) screens next on Saturday, May 17th with the #Esbórnia (#Binge) party following, and on Sunday May 18th, it will be a great next for the entire family as the festival presents the highest-grossing animated film of all time, Disney’s “Frozen.”
The following week starts with a double feature night on Tuesday, May 20th as the festival will pay tribute to director Martin Scorsese and actor Robert De Niro with screenings of their classic films; “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull” and the double features continue on Wednesday, May 21st with back-to-back screenings of “Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back.” Brazilian band Autoramas and rapper/hip hop artist BNegão will then take to the stage for a very special performance.
The 2013 Brazilian film, “O Lobo Atrás da Porta” (“The Wolf Behind the Door”) starring Leandra Leal will play next on May 22nd and it’s time for another cult classic on the 23rd with the screening of the 1978 musical “Grease”.
Next on the Saturday, 24th, the festival presents Francis Ford Coppola’s classic film, “The Godfather Part II” DJs Dodô Azevedo and Mario Mamede will following bringing the best of pop and rock to the after-party. Then it’s a family night again on Sunday, May 25th with the showing of the 2013 animated sequel, “Despicable Me 2.”
On the night of Tuesday the 27th, very special guests, Scottish alternative rock band The Jesus and Mary Chain will play after a screening of the 1984 sci-fi action film, “The Terminator.” Formed in 1983, The Jesus and Mary Chain have six studio album releases and are well known for their songs including; “Just Like Honey”, “Sometimes Always” and “April Skies.”
Next its time for more Star Wars on the 28th, with the presentation of “Return of the Jedi” and on the 29th the festival will screen 2013’s “Iron Man 3” with Brazilian singer Céu performing Bob Marley’s “Catch a Fire” following the screening.
It will be time to dance on May 30th as the 1987 American romantic film “Dirty Dancing” takes over the Marina da Glória screen and Manie Dansante follows bringing the best of electro swing, jazz and other new retro-rhythms.
The 1996 film “Trainspotting” then will play on Friday, May 30th and finally on June 1st, the screening of the Steven Spielberg classic “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” will close out the festival.
Entry is open for each night’s movie screening until thirty minutes after the start of each session. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays sessions begin at 7PM, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM, and on Sundays at 6PM.
