Uruguay’s State-owned telecommunications company, Antel, has launched its 5G network in four of the country’s 19 departments.

The service will gradually expand to cover the entire territory in the upcoming weeks.

Antel’s president, Gabriel Gurméndez, emphasized the nationwide deployment of 5G during the network’s presentation.

Starting today, around 300,000 customers will have access to this “instantaneous” and “efficient” technology, which will enhance their everyday mobile phone experience.

Antel is a pioneer in Uruguay for deploying 5G, and the service is currently available in various areas of Montevideo, Canelones, Colonia, and Maldonado.

It will extend to Flores in two days, followed by Rio Negro and Paysandú the following week.

In 2019, Antel introduced the first commercial 5G network in Latin America, initially on a trial basis in small towns.

Uruguay benefits from an extensive fiber optic network that covers almost the entire country.
