Moody’s expects Discovery Bank, the South African digital lender launched in 2019, to keep growing its assets by about 21% a year. The ratings agency also expects the bank to turn profitable after all expenses in the year to June 2027.

Its view, reported by the Johannesburg paper Business Day on Thursday 15 October, gives foreign investors an outside read on a fast-growing bank. The bank belongs to Discovery, a Johannesburg-listed insurer whose Vitality health-rewards model also runs a US business.

What Moody’s Said About Discovery Bank

Moody’s Ratings is a New York-based credit rating agency whose views shape how lenders and investors price risk. It said the bank’s assets grew by an average of 21% over the past three years.

It projects similar growth rates over the next two to three years, as the bank moves beyond its set-up phase. The agency called the lender a “behavioural bank” built on a “shared-value” model through its Vitality Money programme.

Moody’s said the bank is “well positioned to develop into an agile, cost-effective bank, without the burden of a costly branch network.” It added that the lender is investing in its data and machine-learning capabilities.

The agency said rewards that link savings and borrowing rates to clients’ financial behaviour have been “instrumental in attracting retail depositors.” The bank is led by chief executive Hylton Kallner and has about 1.6 million clients.

The Numbers Behind the Forecast

Discovery Bank reported normalised profit from operations of R370 million (about US$22 million) in the year to 30 June 2026. That compares with a loss of R68 million (about US$4 million) a year earlier, according to Discovery’s audited annual results.

Conversions use the South African Reserve Bank’s rate of R16.4706 per US dollar on Wednesday 14 October. Revenue rose 31% to about R3.1 billion (about US$190 million), while the credit loss ratio improved to 2.71%.

Clients rose 26% to 1.57 million, and the number of accounts rose 26% to 3.77 million. Discovery says 70% of new business came from people outside the Discovery Group.

Retail deposits grew 17% to R27.2 billion (about US$1.65 billion), while gross retail advances rose 40% to R12.9 billion (about US$783 million). Moody’s put total assets at R35 billion (about US$2.1 billion) as of June 2026.

Home loans drove much of the lending growth, with the book topping R4 billion (about US$243 million), up 129%, Business Day reported. About 71% of that book came from clients switching from other banks.

The bank’s common equity tier 1 ratio, a core measure of its capital buffer, stood at 16.29% at the end of June. Moody’s noted management’s target of R3 billion (about US$182 million) in annual profit by June 2029, which management says remains on track.

The Risks Moody’s Flagged

Moody’s said the bank’s aggressive balance sheet growth, small size and limited diversification hide risks. Its product range remains narrow, mainly deposits and revolving credit, with home loans added over the past year.

The agency said it will take time to prove the bank’s self-built risk management systems. It also warned that deposits stay partly “confidence- and interest-rate-sensitive” while many clients keep their main account elsewhere.

As a stabiliser, the bank has approved funding lines from Discovery Group and access to the Reserve Bank’s liquidity lines. It could also tap asset managers and insurers or securitise part of its credit card book, Moody’s said.

Competition for savers is rising, and Nedbank’s 2025 annual report singled out the lender as a start-up gaining deposits. Insurer Sanlam has also moved into banking, as covered in Sanlam Steps Into Banking With GoTyme, Following Old Mutual and Discovery.

What It Means for US Readers

Discovery is not listed in the US, but its Vitality business has a growing American arm. VitalityHealth USA covered 3.6 million members at the end of June and bought Icario, a US health engagement firm, on 1 September.

Icario mainly serves US government-sponsored health plans, including Medicaid and Medicare Advantage, and covers 11 million lives. A bank that funds itself and makes a profit could leave the group more room to back such expansion.

For holders of Discovery shares in Johannesburg, the bank has turned from a drag into a profit contributor. Group normalised profit from operations rose 17% to R17.75 billion (about US$1.08 billion) in the year to June.

Americans living in Johannesburg can choose between traditional banks and digital lenders such as the one Discovery runs. Moody’s caution about a narrow product range is a reason to compare fees and services before switching.

What Is Not Known

Business Day did not say whether Moody’s assigned a formal credit rating to the bank or only published an assessment. The full Moody’s report is not publicly available, so its rating terms could not be independently confirmed.

It is not known how deposits would behave if interest rates fall or competition for savers grows. Discovery has not given a date for wider banking services to small businesses, which Moody’s said will take time.

The Reserve Bank’s policy rate stands at 7.25%, and consumer inflation was 4.4% in August. Background on the country is in South Africa Regions and Provinces Explained and South Africa History Explained, From Origins to 2026.

What Prediction Markets Say

Polymarket gives a 76.3% chance that South Africa‘s annual consumer inflation for December 2026 will be above 5.0% (15 October, 2:06 a.m. ET). These are bets, not polls, and about US$92,000 has been traded across the market’s ranges.

The above-5.0% range has drawn about US$25,000 in bets and gained about 10 points over the past week. Higher inflation tends to delay rate cuts, which matters for the interest-rate-sensitive deposits Moody’s describes.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
