RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The turn of the year boosted the tourism sector in the city of Rio de Janeiro. According to a survey by HotéisRIO, hotels in Rio de Janeiro registered 96% occupancy. The figure confirms the sector’s expectations, which anticipated a large flow of visitors.

Hotel managers attribute the demand to the wide vaccination coverage and the requirement of proof of vaccination to access hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions, which somehow helped to reassure travelers.

The majority of bookings were from Brazilian tourists from São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goiás and Rio Grande do Sul.

The data released by the hotels show that in the period from December 30, 2021 to January 1, 2022, the most popular neighborhoods were Ipanema and Leblon, with 95.08%, closely followed by Barra and Recreio, with 95.02%. Next came Leme and Copacabana, with 91.31%, Flamengo and Botafogo (91.27%), and downtown (88.09%). The Barra/Recreio region, in the West Zone, featured a fireworks display at 10 points, 6 of which were hotels.

HotéisRIO chairman Alfredo Lopes celebrated the results and emphasized that a great part of guests who booked were vaccinated and had been informed about the requirements to control the pandemic.

“This positive result is due to intense publicity and promotion efforts, made in partnership with the state government, by SETUR, in all the cities sending tourists to Rio de Janeiro,” Alfredo Lopes stressed.
