Possible volcanic ash fall warned in five Ecuadorian provinces
The Ecuadorian Geophysical Institute (IG) of the National Polytechnic School warned on Friday, October 14, of the possible fall of ash from the Sangay volcano in five provinces of Ecuador.
According to the IG, since 8 PM Thursday (1 AM GMT Friday), a thin cloud of ash that reaches approximately 1,770 meters above the crater and is heading west-northwest was seen through satellite images (GOES-16).
“Consequently, there is a low possibility of ash fall in the provinces of Tungurahua, Chimborazo, Bolivar, Cañar, and Morona Santiago,” it said.
This phenomenon has been persistent within the current eruptive period that began in May 2019.
Sangay volcano, 5,230 meters above sea level and located in the southeast of Ecuador, on an Andean branch of the entrance to the Amazon, is part of the 50 of this type of mountains that the country has – most of them located in the so-called “Avenue of volcanoes”, in the Andean zone.
According to several researchers, Sangay owes its name to the Kichwa word “samkay”, which translates as to frighten or terrify, although it could also come from the Shuar word “shanga”, which is interpreted as kind.
