New U.S. Tariff May Barely Dent Chile’s Copper Industry

Chile, which sells the most copper in the world, faces a big challenge after the US said it will put a 50% tax on its copper starting in August 2025.

This announcement surprised the Chilean government and copper companies, because the US is an important but not the main customer for Chilean copper.

Copper is vital for Chile’s economy. Last year, copper exports brought in more than $50 billion, making up more than half of Chile’s export earnings.

The mining sector supports about 10% of the country’s gross domestic product. Most of Chile’s copper goes to China and other Asian countries, with the US taking around 12% of exports.

When the US made the announcement, Chile’s government spoke with American trade officials to clarify details, since nobody had explained which copper products the tax would hit.

At the same time, Chile’s government talked with other trading partners, showing its plan to quickly find new buyers if the US market gets too costly.

Copper prices in global markets jumped over 12% as buyers and sellers reacted. Experts say that if the US keeps the tariff, American manufacturers will pay more for copper wires, pipes, and electronics.

Meanwhile, Chilean miners are preparing to send more copper to other big buyers instead of losing profit. Chile has kept its mining industry strong through years of investment and efficiency improvements.

In 2024, the country shipped 3.45 million tons of copper ore and concentrates, earning over $30 billion from those shipments alone. With global demand high, mainly due to electric vehicles and solar panels, Chile has strong options outside the US for its copper sales.
