Key Facts

—Prediction markets. Polymarket: 8% by 31 March 2027, down 10.5 points in 24 hours (12:25 p.m. ET, 21 October).

—Trigger. We found no reported trigger for the drop.

—Trading. That contract traded US$6,640 in 24 hours; the whole Merz market, US$16,861.

—Backdrop. Merz’s approval hit 10% in ARD’s October poll, a record low since 1997.

—Next. Germany’s next federal election is not due until 2029.

Traders now give German Chancellor Friedrich Merz only an 8% chance of leaving office by 31 March 2027, down 10.5 points in a day, but almost nobody is trading that bet.

Polymarket, a crypto-based prediction market, lists a contract on whether Merz will be out as chancellor by 31 March 2027. Its price fell from about 18.5% on 20 October to 8.0% at 12:25 p.m. ET on 21 October, a drop of 10.5 points in 24 hours.

The fall looks bigger than the trading behind it. That single contract has changed hands for only US$10,933 in its whole life, so a handful of small orders can swing its price.

In Plain English

—Prediction market: a venue where people bet real money on events. A price of 8 cents for a “yes” share means the crowd puts the odds near 8%.

—Chancellor: Germany’s head of government, who runs the cabinet. Merz has held the job since May 2025.

—Out as chancellor: resigning, being removed, or announcing a departure before the deadline. Both platforms count an announcement as a yes.

What Prediction Markets Say

Polymarket and Kalshi both list Merz departure markets, but they are built differently. The Polymarket prices below were read at 12:25 p.m. ET on 21 October 2026; Kalshi’s show their own dates.

Merz out as chancellor, by date

—Polymarket, by 31 March 2027: 8.0%, the midpoint of a 7% bid and 9% ask (last trade 7%), down 10.5 points in 24 hours and 12.5 points in a week.

—Polymarket, by 31 December 2026: 7.5%, up 2 points. By 30 June 2027: 29.5%. By 31 December 2027: 39.5%.

—Kalshi, before 1 April 2027: last trade 15 cents, buyers at 9 cents and sellers at 16 cents. These quotes were last updated on 16 October, so they may be stale.

—Kalshi, before 1 January 2028: last trade 47 cents (bid 39, ask 47), also last updated on 16 October.

Trading is thin everywhere. The Polymarket Merz event moved US$16,861 in 24 hours, so this market is thinly traded.

The 31 March contract alone moved US$6,640.

Kalshi is a US exchange regulated in the US by the CFTC, the federal derivatives regulator. Its Merz quotes in our read were five days old, so treat them with caution.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

Why the Odds Moved

We found no reported trigger. There was no resignation signal, coalition collapse or court ruling dated 19–21 October that we could find to explain the move.

One possible reading is mechanical. The 31 March contract’s earlier price of about 18.5% sat well above the 5.5% that Polymarket then showed for the earlier 31 December 2026 deadline, even though a later deadline cannot be less likely than an earlier one.

That gap suggests the old price was a stale or lopsided trade. The new 8.0% sits right beside the 7.5% for 31 December 2026, which is what a tidy ladder should look like.

This is our reading of the price pattern, not a reported fact.

The political backdrop is real, though. On 6 September the AfD became the strongest party in Saxony-Anhalt.

On 20 September it won Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where Merz’s CDU failed to clear the 5% hurdle and Merz called the result a “disaster”.

Then the ARD DeutschlandTrend, run by the pollster Infratest dimap and published on 1 October, put satisfaction with Merz at 10%, the lowest for any chancellor since the series began in 1997. It showed 88% dissatisfied, and the CDU/CSU alliance at 20% against 27% for the AfD.

We have written about the state results in our state election report.

How a German Chancellor Can Be Removed

Germany makes it hard to topple a chancellor. Under Article 67 of the Basic Law, the Bundestag can end a government only by electing a successor with a majority of all its members, a rule called the constructive vote of no confidence.

A chancellor can also resign. Markets that count an announced departure, like the two above, can therefore pay out before anyone formally leaves.

Merz was elected on a second ballot in May 2025; our report on that vote has the detail.

What It Means for US Readers

Germany is Europe’s largest economy and a core US partner in NATO and in trade talks with Washington. A leadership change in Berlin would matter for defence spending, Ukraine policy and the euro.

For investors, the signal here is weak. Odds of 8% on a US$10,933 contract are not a forecast, and the longer-dated prices, 29.5% by mid-2027 on Polymarket, say more about the mood than this one number does.

What It Means for Latin America and Africa

We found no reported link between this price move and any Latin American or African policy. What can be said is that Germany is the largest economy in the EU, so who leads it shapes the bloc’s trade and aid positions toward both regions.

Any real change at the top would be worth watching for those partners. For now the markets show no such signal, and our prediction markets hub tracks the odds that do move.

What Is Not Known

Open questions

—Why the 31 March price fell. No reported event explains it.

—Whether any real trader holds a view behind a contract this thin.

—Whether Merz faces a challenge from inside the CDU or the Social Democrats. Nothing we found says so.

—How Kalshi and Polymarket will treat an announced but delayed exit. Their rules differ in detail.

The next checkpoints are further polls and any statement from the coalition partners. Until one of those shifts, the price reflects very few bets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the odds that Merz leaves office by March 2027?

Polymarket put them at 8.0% at 12:25 p.m. ET on 21 October 2026, down 10.5 points in 24 hours. Kalshi’s equivalent contract last traded at 15 cents, but its quotes date from 16 October.

Why did the Merz exit odds fall?

We found no reported trigger. The earlier price looks out of line with nearby deadlines, so the drop may reflect a stale trade in a thin market.

Are these prediction market prices reliable?

Treat them as bets, not polls. The Merz event moved only US$16,861 in 24 hours on Polymarket, so single prices can swing on small orders.

How can a German chancellor be removed?

Parliament must elect a successor by a majority of all its members, under Article 67 of the Basic Law. The chancellor can also resign, and both platforms count an announced departure as a yes.

What is Kalshi?

Kalshi is an exchange regulated in the US by the CFTC, the federal derivatives regulator. It lists event contracts, including whether Merz leaves office.
