Market Moves: São Martinho and Raízen’s Upgraded Prospects
In the complex world of commodities trading, even subtle shifts can accurately forecast significant future trends and market movements.
Bank of America recently upgraded São Martinho’s stock from neutral to buy, raising the target price from R$34 to R$35.
This change shows optimism about the sugar and ethanol sector due to rising prices, a weaker real, and strong fundamentals.
Globally, sugar supplies might barely meet demand or fall short over the next year and a half.
Brazil’s ethanol output is down, but demand remains high. This mismatch is expected to reduce stock levels at season’s end.
For the 2024/25 season, analysts foresee a sugar shortage of 1.2 million tons, assuming steady production in Brazil and India.

Sugar prices, which have recently recovered by 7%, are predicted to stabilize at levels 10% higher than today’s prices.
Similarly, ethanol could regain price parity with gasoline, rising by 10% by year-end.
Price adjustments may boost São Martinho’s EBITDA by 6%, with expected cash flow yields of 6% in 2025 and 14% in 2026.
Raízen also retains BofA’s confidence with a slightly adjusted target price from R$5 to R$4.90.
Analysts expect better profit dynamics by 2025, driven by both sugar and ethanol. Moreover, they see potential in second-generation ethanol technologies.
Despite current cash flow issues, Raízen’s stock is deemed undervalued, now trading at 3.5 times its 2025 earnings, down from the usual 4.5 times.
BofA also praises Adecoagro, a major player in agriculture across Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.
It uplifted its stock forecast from US$15 to US$15.50, buoyed by strong performances in sugar, ethanol, and agricultural sectors like rice farming.
These updates signify a broader shift in the commodities market, reflecting broader economic currents and technological advancements in production.
