Lula questions the role of international organizations in conflicts

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed doubts about the effectiveness of international organizations in addressing conflicts during a press conference in Paris.

He argued that these institutions no longer serve their original purposes and lack the power and representation needed in the modern world.

Lula criticized the UN’s inability to resolve issues such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and condemned the unilateral actions taken by powerful nations without consulting others.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, Lula acknowledged that his distance from the conflict influenced his perspective and led to differing opinions compared to those directly affected.

He emphasized the importance of peace and urged the conflicting parties to engage in negotiations.

Lula mentioned Brazil’s willingness to participate in mediation efforts, with the country’s Special Advisor for International Affairs attending a meeting in Copenhagen to discuss peace initiatives.

When questioned about reports of armed uprisings against Russian forces in Ukraine, Lula refrained from making judgments due to a lack of information.

He stated the need for reliable facts before discussing such delicate matters.

Lula also expressed concern about Haiti, emphasizing the global community’s responsibility to assist the country in overcoming its challenges.

He highlighted Brazil’s longstanding humanitarian aid efforts in Haiti and called for increased international involvement.

Lula presented his agenda on Haiti to French President Macron and intends to raise the issue at the G20, emphasizing the urgency of supporting Haiti during its political crisis and addressing issues such as gang violence and disease outbreaks.

He advocated for stronger, more representative institutions that address the needs of the modern world.

Lula expressed his hopes for peace in Ukraine and his concerns about Haiti’s situation, urging greater international attention and support for the country.
