Ipec survey: 23% believe Brazil is governed democratically, 17% that it is not democratic

Data from the latest Ipec survey, commissioned by Globo, released on Tuesday, October 25, show that 23% of Brazilians believe Brazil is being governed democratically.

On the other end, 17% say the country is not being democratically governed.

The institute asked voters to rate from 1 (not at all democratic) to 10 (very democratic) the question “how democratic is Brazil currently being governed?” The average score of the answers was 5.9, slightly above the average value of 5.5.

Among those who approve of Jair Bolsonaro’s (Liberal Party – PL, right) government, 40% gave a score of 10 and believed the government is being run in a very democratic way, and 3% gave a score of 1.

Among those who rejected the current government, 10% gave a score of 10, and 33% gave a score of 1.

Ipec also asked the voters if they consider it important to live in a country governed democratically.

The vast majority (70%) gave a score of 10 to the question, indicating that they consider it very important. Only 3% gave a score of 1.

Another question asked by the institute was whether the interviewees agreed or disagreed with the phrase, “Democracy means having the freedom to express your thoughts, no matter what they are”.

In this question, Ipec asked the voters to evaluate with grades from 1 (totally disagree) to 5 (totally agree).

Once again, the vast majority (71%) said they strongly agreed with the statement. Only 6% said they completely disagreed.

The poll released on Monday, October 24, also showed that former president Lula da Silva (Workers’ Party – PT, left) had 50% of the vote intentions in the runoff, compared to 43% for Bolsonaro.

The survey interviewed 3,008 people in 183 municipalities between Saturday (October 22) and Monday (October 24).

The margin of error is two percentage points higher or lower, with a confidence level of 95%.

The survey was registered in the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) under number BR-06043/2022.
