“Frente de Todos” splits in the Argentine Senate

In the middle of this week, the ruling Frente de Todos suffered a split in the Upper House of the Argentinean Parliament.

Legislators Guillermo Snopek (Jujuy), Edgardo Kueider (Entre Ríos), Carlos Espínola (Corrientes), and María Eugenia Catalfamo (San Luis) left the ruling bloc in the Senate.

They will now form a new bench, the Bloque Unidad Federal (Federal Unity Bloc).

With these desertions, Kirchnerism is left in a situation in which it has lost the majority it had enjoyed until now in that space, shortening even more the already battered margins of political maneuvering available to the leftist President Alberto Fernandez.

As for the number of deputies by specific blocs, now the first minority within this Legislative body is represented by the opposition Juntos por el Cambio (Together for Change), with 33 senators.

Although the new block of Senators could continue voting on some issues with the ruling Frente de Todos, the divergences between both benches could surface in the middle of other debates.

All in all, the ruptures in such a fraction have meant a hard blow to the interests of Cristina Kirchner and Co.
