Expats · Morocco
Living in Morocco costs far less than in the United States, and rent is the biggest variable: a 60-square-metre flat in Casablanca’s Hay Hassani costs a fraction of the same flat in Anfa. Annual inflation was slightly negative in August 2026, at minus 0.3%, according to the national statistics office, because food prices fell. The official minimum wage of 3,422.72 dirhams a month (about US$350) shows how local prices are set.

The Short Answer: Cheap Basics, Rent Decides the Budget
Morocco’s annual inflation turned slightly negative: the High Commission for Planning (HCP), the national statistics office, reported prices 0.3% lower in August 2026 than a year earlier. The fall came from food, which was down 3.9%, while non-food prices rose 2.5%.
The HCP’s core measure, which strips out volatile and regulated prices, rose 0.1% over the same year. Prices were up 0.8% on the month, so this is not a falling cost of living; for a newcomer the bigger decision is where to rent.
What Locals Earn: The Minimum Wage as a Price Anchor
The legal minimum wage for private-sector industry, trade and services rose 5% on 1 January 2026 to 17.92 dirhams per hour. For 191 working hours a month that is 3,422.72 dirhams gross (about US$350).
Local services are priced against pay of this order, so a dollar income can go a long way outside the most expensive districts.
Rent: The Biggest Gap Between Neighbourhoods
Rent is where Morocco’s cost of living splits. The consultancy Reaconsult publishes market estimates of monthly rent per square metre, and we applied them to a 60-square-metre flat to show the range (rate: 9.78 dirhams per US dollar, EODHD, 19 October 2026).
| City and area | Rent per m² a month | 60 m² flat a month |
|---|---|---|
| Casablanca: Anfa and Ain Diab | 100–140 dirhams | 6,000–8,400 dirhams (about US$610–860) |
| Casablanca: Hay Hassani and Oulfa | 40–55 dirhams | 2,400–3,300 dirhams (about US$245–340) |
| Rabat: Souissi | 75–105 dirhams | 4,500–6,300 dirhams (about US$460–645) |
| Rabat: Hassan and centre | 55–78 dirhams | 3,300–4,680 dirhams (about US$340–480) |
| Marrakech: Hivernage | 75–115 dirhams | 4,500–6,900 dirhams (about US$460–705) |
| Marrakech: Guéliz | 62–95 dirhams | 3,720–5,700 dirhams (about US$380–585) |
To check a listing, multiply the rent per square metre by the size of the flat. A 45-square-metre flat at 75 dirhams per square metre comes to 3,375 dirhams a month (about US$345).
Use the ranges as a sanity check rather than a quote, because a landlord’s asking price depends on the building, the floor and whether the flat is furnished. Ask for the same figures from two or three agents before you sign.

Getting Around: High-Speed Rail

The state railway ONCF runs the Al Boraq high-speed train between Casablanca and Tangier in about 2 hours 10 minutes. We did not confirm current 2026 fares, so we do not quote them.
Fares depend on date and demand, so check the ONCF website before you plan a budget.
Getting In and Staying Safe
US citizens can enter Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days, and the passport must have at least six months’ validity. The US State Department rates Morocco Level 2, “exercise increased caution”, because of terrorism risk, in an advisory issued on 4 September 2026.
The advisory names tourist sites, transport hubs, markets and shopping centres as possible targets. Long-term residents should register with the US embassy and follow its alerts.
The Downsides
Low average prices can hide costs that expats pay, such as furnished rentals, private health care and international schools, which we could not price from official data.
Inflation is low, but the dirham’s value against the dollar moves, and a 1-dirham change shifts every conversion on this page by roughly 10%. Anyone paid in dollars should keep a buffer.
What It Means for You
If you earn in dollars, Morocco’s everyday costs are modest and rent is the lever you control. Renting a 60-square-metre flat in a middle-priced district, such as Hassan in Rabat or Guéliz in Marrakech, would cost roughly US$340–585 a month on these estimates.
Before committing, rent for a month, price your own groceries and compare two or three districts. The cheapest area is rarely the best match for your commute or schedule.
What Is Not Known
We did not find an official, dated rent index by neighbourhood, so the table above rests on one private source. We also did not find official 2026 prices for groceries, utilities or health insurance, so we do not quote them.
