The certification

After a marathon plenary session in Bogotá, the electoral tribunal closed the definitive count late on Wednesday and declared the result. It ordered official credentials for De la Espriella and his running mate, José Manuel Restrepo.

The declaration ends the formal process that began with the June 21 vote. With it, the last procedural challenges, including a string of contested tally sheets, are now closed.

The final numbers

The official count put De la Espriella on 12,960,166 votes, or 49.66%, against 12,708,312, or 48.70%, for Cepeda. The gap of about 251,800 votes is one of the narrowest in Colombia’s modern history.

If anything, the certified result widened his margin slightly from election night. The Registraduría reported a 99.997% match between the rapid count and the official scrutiny.

Who accepted, who is still arguing

Cepeda conceded on the night of the vote, and his Pacto Histórico coalition later withdrew its formal complaints about the count. Several figures on the left have publicly accepted the outcome.

President Gustavo Petro, however, has continued to question the process on social media, alleging irregularities he has not substantiated. His objections do not change the certified result.

What it means for foreign residents

For expats and digital nomads, the immediate effect is calm: with the result settled, the protest risk that flared after the vote has receded. No visa, tax or residency rule changes on the strength of a certification.
