Cine Esporte Series Screens Olympic and Paralympic Films

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Cine Esporte series is presenting free screenings of films about sports, various topics, and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Taking place in five venues in the city, the series features two sections, the first presented during the Olympic Games from August 16th through August 20th at Centro Cultural Justiça Federal ( CCJF) and at Cine Joia Jacarepaguá.

The second section during the Paralympic Games on September 13th through September 18th will be at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil- RJ (CCBB-RJ), Ponto Cine Guadalupe, Centro Cultural Justiça Federal (CCJF) and the Cine Joia Copacabana.

Organized in partnership with the Federation Internationale Cinema Television Sportifs (FICTS), the series features a total of eighteen films that have been featured in film festivals around the world.

The series opened on August 16th at the Centro Cultural Justiça Federal (CCJF) with a screening of “Olympia.” A film by Rio-born director Rodrigo Mac Niven, “Olympia” focuses on the politics behind the construction of the Olympic Games. The film will screen again on Thursday, August 17th at CCJF at 7PM.

Additional notable films in the series include, “O Estopim,” about the disappearance and death of Rocinha resident Amarildo de Souza and the military occupation of the favelas during the lead-up to the World Cup and Olympic Games; Mark Achbar and Jennifer Abbott’s 2005 documentary “The Corporation;” Jorge Furtado’s 1989 short film, “Ilha das Flores ” (Isle of Flowers); and Yulia Bivsheva, Sofia Geveyler, Sofia Kucher’s 2015 film “Spirit in Motion,” the official documentary of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.
