Chile’s 2024 Defense Strategy

In 2024, Chile prioritizes bolstering its Armed Forces’ capabilities to enhance military prowess and ensure deterrence and operational superiority.

This drive began with the 2023 revision of the National Defense Policy, aiming for a comprehensive update by 2024.

Chile is also crafting its inaugural military policy, a significant step toward strategic clarity.

Last year, Chile completed a Risk and Threat Assessment. This lays the groundwork for updating the Presidential Directive for External Security in the coming year.

Moreover, efforts will persist to refine the National Alarm Plan, providing clear guidelines for crisis response.

The Army is advancing with the Alfil project, focusing on renewing a large segment of its military vehicles.

This includes the procurement of 373 trucks, with a budget of approximately $98 million.

Concurrently, the Cromo project aims to acquire advanced transport and command vehicles, reflecting a commitment to modernization.

The Navy is set to welcome the Almirante Óscar Viel icebreaker, a testament to Chile’s naval enhancement efforts.

2024 Rim of The Pacific exercise

The Chilean Navy also readies for the 2024 Rim of The Pacific exercise, showcasing its commitment to international defense cooperation.

Meanwhile, the Air Force (FACh) embarks on modernizing its F-16 fleet. This $177 million project with Lockheed Martin signifies a significant leap in aerial combat capabilities.

FACh is also planning the National Space Center (CEN), marking its entry into space technology.

Furthermore, FACh explores acquiring new light helicopters, attracting bids from top aerospace manufacturers.

In conclusion, Chile’s 2024 defense strategy is a dynamic and multifaceted approach. It combines policy innovation, fleet enhancement, and technological advancement.

These concerted efforts aim to fortify Chile’s defense readiness, ensuring the country’s security and stature on the global stage.
