Brazil’s Bolsonaro to meet with Hungarian prime minister on Thursday

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Viktor Orbán, demonized in Western Europe for his political and personal independence, is considered a “reference” by Brazil’s Bolsonaristas. The Hungarian shows how it is possible to disregard Western Europe’s know-it-all attitude and still be successful.

After a visit to Russia, President Jair Bolsonaro will meet Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the capital, Budapest.

Orbán is considered one of the most important leaders of the conservative movement in Europe today and impressively shows the world that Hungary is going its own way, as it has for centuries.

Orbán is often demonized by Western mainstream media as a right-wing extremist, but until now we have not seen images from Hungary of protesters being brutally beaten up by police, as we have seen recently in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.

Many people in the world have noticed that these countries are no longer a moral reference, something that has been known in Hungary for some time.

The political and personal independence and popularity of the Hungarian prime minister is considered a “reference” for Bolsonaro’s supporters such as MP Eduardo Bolsonaro (PSL-SP), son of the Brazilian president.

Bolsonaro’s visit to Hungary, six weeks before elections in the European country, signals support for the prime minister.

Orbán has been in power for four consecutive terms since 2010 and now faces a coalition of six parties from different political spectrums seeking to defeat him in the elections.

Similar to President Bolsonaro, Orbán bases his popularity on policies that target “traditional family values” and the Christian community.

He keeps media outlets that engage in pure political propaganda at bay and does not roll out a red carpet to all the NGOs that come along, something that is particularly criticized in Brazil.

Political propaganda is the bread and butter of the vast majority of Brazilian media, and scorning and ridiculing Bolsonaro is simply part of political correctness here.

Orbán’s immigration policies also differ from those of Western Europe. It is more selective and never forgets for a moment that Hungary belongs to the Hungarians and not to newcomers.

With this trip, Bolsonaro hopes to deepen cooperation with Hungary in the areas of defense, science, and technology.

Orbán also favors Brazil joining the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a group of rich countries that includes Hungary.
