Rodrigo Pacheco, President of the Senate, reassured that the autonomy of the Central Bank would be safeguarded, countering any doubts raised amidst President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s calls for interest rate reductions.

Pacheco emphasized that the autonomy of the Central Bank is an established national reality that needs time to be fully understood and implemented.

He stated, “The reduction of the basic interest rate will take place within the framework of the Central Bank’s autonomy.”

President Lula had urged senators to scrutinize the actions of Central Bank President Roberto Campos Neto following the recent decision to maintain the Selic rate at 13.75% per year.

Lula, who has been critical of the monetary policy since assuming office, has also questioned the 2021 law that granted autonomy to the Central Bank.

However, Pacheco made it clear that no legislation targeting the Central Bank’s autonomy will be put to a vote.

He expressed confidence that the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) will soon enact the interest rate cuts demanded by President Lula and an increasing number of political and business leaders.

“I am fully convinced that there will be a reduction in the basic interest rate,” Pacheco asserted. “I have great confidence in the Central Bank’s awareness and actions.”

Pacheco’s statements reflect the Senate’s commitment to upholding the autonomy of the Central Bank and its belief in the efficacy of Copom’s decisions regarding interest rates, despite differing perspectives within the political landscape.
