Brazilian industrial production shrinks in January

According to the IBGE’s Regional Monthly Industrial Survey (PIM), between December and January, Brazilian industrial production shrank in eight of the 15 locations analyzed.

The official figures indicate a drop of 0.3% in the monthly comparison. In 12 months, the industry showed a variation of -0.2%, with seven locations presenting negative results.

The states that presented the sharpest drops were Rio Grande do Sul (-3.4%), São Paulo (-3.1%), and Mato Grosso (-2.0%).

The drop in São Paulo’s industrial production came after a 0.8% retreat in the previous month.

In Rio Grande do Sul, the retraction of the economy in January eliminated the gain of 1.9% that had been registered in December. Almeida affirms that the retraction of the industry in the Gaucho state is also related to tobacco production.

The retraction in Mato Grosso interrupted two consecutive months of expansion, the food and beverage sector decreased production.

Negative results were also observed in the states of Rio de Janeiro (-1.0%), Santa Catarina (-1.0%), Pará (-0.4%), Paraná (-0.3%), and Bahia (-0.2%).

Espírito Santo (18.6%) and Pernambuco (17.3%) saw the largest industrial expansion in the period.

Finally, the other positive results, compared to the previous month, came from the following regions: the Northeast (6.1%), Goiás (2.5%), Amazonas (2.4%), Ceará (1.5%), and Minas Gerais (0.6%).
