Brazil has a “commitment” to the Inter-American Democratic Charter and democratic values, Defense Minister Paulo Sérgio Nogueira reaffirmed on July 26.

During his speech at the 15th Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas in Brasilia, the official called on his colleagues to comply with the principles agreed upon at the 1st Conference, held in 1995 in the United States.

“On the part of Brazil, I express respect for the OAS (Organization of American States) Charter of States and the American Democratic Charter and its values, principles, and mechanism,” he stated.

The ministers expect to sign on July 28 a document reaffirming their commitment to the OAS Charter.

Among the points agreed upon is a commitment to the promotion of peace, concern for migratory flows, preservation of the environment, discussion of cyber defense and cyberspace, containment of pandemics, and recognition of the role of women in defense and security.

The Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas is the largest defense and security-related meeting in the Western Hemisphere.

Every two years, the host country alternates among the 34 nations and regions that make up the forum, and Brazil occupies that role for the 2021-2022 biennium.
