Health Ministry: Brazil Passes 110,000 Covid-19 Deaths

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil has reached the mark of 110,000 deaths from the novel coronavirus pandemic. With 1,212 new records in the past 24 hours, the total reached 111,100. The data were released yesterday in an update by the Ministry of Health. On Tuesday, the body’s panel had recorded 109,888 fatalities as a result of the disease. There are a further 3,173 deaths under investigation.

The Ministry of Health’s report also counted 3,456,652 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, 49,298 new coronavirus infections were reported by state and municipal Health Secretariats.

Statistics are lower on Sundays and Mondays due to the challenge in feeding data by Health Secretariats on weekends. However, on Tuesdays there is a trend towards higher numbers due to the backlog of data sent to the Ministry of Health’s system.

The Ministry’s update also recorded 730,298 people in follow-up. According to the report published by the portfolio, 2,615,254 people have already recovered.

The states with the highest number of deaths are São Paulo (27,591), Rio de Janeiro (14,913), Ceará (8,241), Pernambuco (7,280), and Pará (6,015).

The states with the fewest deaths are Tocantins (536), Roraima (575), Acre (591), Amapá (622), and Mato Grosso do Sul (668).

International comparison

Brazil ranks second in terms of cases and deaths. The leader is the United States, which according to the portfolio’s Epidemiological Bulletin, reached 5,313,080 infections and 168,446 deaths.

Considering the incidence (cases per one million inhabitants) and mortality (deaths per one million inhabitants), Brazil ranks 8th, with indexes of 2,722 and 98, respectively. Last week it ranked 9th.
