New protests in Peru

Peruvian social organizations, federations and unions have resumed demonstrations on Wednesday to ask the President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, to hold new elections and the closure of Congress.

The protesters have managed to block a section of the Interoceanic highway in the area of Challhuanca, province of Aymaraes, while there have also been clashes on another section of road on the way out of Arequipa.

Given the blockades that have occurred in the communication routes in different parts of the country, Boluarte has reiterated his call for peace and to avoid violence, since this “does not lead to anything positive” and “constitutes a delay”, as reported the Andean news agency.

The protests that began after the dismissal of the leftist Pedro Castillo have so far resulted in at least 27 deaths and numerous injuries.

In the midst of the protests, the Prime Minister of Peru, Alberto Otárola, has announced that in the next few hours they will announce the successor to the resigned head of Peru’s National Intelligence Directorate (DINI), General Juan Carlos Liendo O’Connor.
