Neymar’s US$350 million move: Brazilian star shines in Saudi Arabia’s burgeoning soccer scene

In a recent transfer to Al Hilal, a leading football club in Saudi Arabia, Brazilian football star Neymar Jr. will earn one of the top three salaries in global football.

His two-year deal with the club guarantees him an impressive US$352 million, equating to US$176 million annually.

This figure places Neymar’s earnings behind notable footballers Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, who are also part of Saudi Arabia’s football scene, earning US$220 million each season.

Both Ronaldo, a five-time winner of the ‘best footballer in the world’ title, and the Golden Ball winner Benzema have made significant contributions to Saudi football, representing clubs Al Nassr and Al Ittihad, respectively.

Saudi Arabia’s active engagement in football, marked by its Public Investment Fund’s acquisition of the nation’s top four teams, showcases its commitment to the sport.

Alongside Neymar, other high earners in the Saudi Pro League include Fabinho at Al Ittihad, earning US$24.2 million annually.

Despite holding the third spot in terms of salary, Neymar’s transfer deal was the most expensive for the Saudi club, costing Al Hilal US$99 million.

Historically, Neymar’s transfers have moved significant funds, with a total of US$440 million over three team changes, including his record-breaking move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

Various factors, including skill, age, and contract duration, determine the value of football players like Neymar or Ronaldo.

Younger players often have higher market values, given their potential for longer playing careers.

Football’s rising prominence in Saudi Arabia aligns with the nation’s aspirations to enhance its global image through sports.

While still in the early stages, the infusion of top-tier talent signifies the beginning of a strategic move, potentially setting the stage for the country to host future global football events.
