The Brazilian gun manufacturer, Taurus Armas, is in contention for a significant tender initiated by the Indian Government.

The tender aims at procuring 425,000 rifles, potentially leveraging local production as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

A crucial phase has been reached as India has requested 10 samples of the T-4 rifle from Taurus for testing.

Salésio Nuhs, CEO of Taurus Armas, relayed this information, mentioning this as the second phase in the weaponry procurement process.

Nuhs noted, “While no confirmation of our progression from the first phase has been received, we’ve been asked to supply rifles for intensive testing starting in October.”

Test environments include the harsh Himalayan conditions known for cold temperatures and high altitudes, the Indian Army Academy, and intense desert heat settings.

The winning bid is expected to be announced by the end of Q1 2024.

Given the scale of the contract, the Indian government has sought clarifications on Taurus’s financial health and its technical and manufacturing capabilities to produce large volumes of rifles while ensuring high-quality standards.

Additionally, Taurus plans to venture into India’s civilian market in partnership with the Jindal Group.

They aim to start production of handguns and revolvers by late 2023, as highlighted by Taurus’s CFO, Sergio Sgrillo.

With a population of 1.37 billion, India stands as one of the global military superpowers, following the U.S., Russia, and China.

With over 1.3 million military personnel, India boasts the fourth-largest military force globally.

Its defense budget approximates US$55 billion.

India also has a significant security personnel presence, with 1.4 million police officers and around 7 million private security agents outnumbering the police force.
