Brazil and U.S. analyze Venezuela’s situation with a view to a possible easing of sanctions
In a recent meeting in Brasilia, delegates from Brazil and the United States discussed Venezuela’s current situation.
The dialogue comes amid suggestions from Latin American leaders for the US to consider lifting sanctions on Venezuela’s government, granted there are transparent and equitable elections in 2024.
Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland, represented the US in the discussions, touching upon high-priority global and regional issues.
She conferred with Maria Laura da Rocha, Secretary General for Foreign Affairs of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, discussing both bilateral and regional matters, including the circumstances in Haiti and Venezuela.

The dialogue follows a collective statement from Latin American leaders and European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, endorsing the cessation of sanctions on Venezuela, contingent upon fair elections in 2024.
This statement was issued during a meeting that involved Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez and opposition leader Gerardo Blyde.
The leaders urged for a political negotiation between the government and opposition, facilitating fair, transparent, and inclusive elections.
They further advocated for an accompanying suspension of sanctions, aiming towards their complete elimination.
Nuland and Da Rocha additionally discussed the Ukrainian conflict and the prospects of Brazil presiding over the G-20.
Nuland’s visit is seen as a part of efforts to reestablish relations between Brazil and the United States.
Her agenda also includes a meeting with Celso Amorim, a key advisor to Lula for international affairs.
