Brazil elections 2022: Superior Electoral Court wants to invite more than 100 international observers
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The president of Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Luiz Edson Fachin, said Tuesday that the authority plans to invite more than 100 international observers to scrutinize the general elections to be held in October.
“Our goal is to have more than 100 international observers during the electoral process in Brazil,” Fachin said at the event Democracy and Elections in Latin America and the Challenges of Electoral Authorities.
The Justice said he has insisted that foreign experts be deployed as election observers since early May.
Fachin also announced the creation of a network to ensure the arrival of EU observers in the country.
He intends to “ensure the arrival in Brazil before and during the elections not only for the organizations mentioned above but also for European authorities and those from other continents interested in closely following the Brazilian electoral process in October.”
The official recalled moments of aggression against electoral institutions in polarized scenarios, such as the attack on the Capitol in Washington in the United States or the attacks on the National Electoral Institute in Mexico.
He explained that this possibility of democratic regression could infiltrate Brazil in this context.
On Sunday, October 2, nearly 150 million Brazilians will exercise their right to vote to elect the next president, state governors, senators, and deputies at the federal, state, and district levels. Voting is compulsory for all citizens between the ages of 18 and 70.
