Brazil: Congress meets this week with expectations of installing the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission of Jan. 8

Federal deputies and senators meet on Wednesday (26) for the first joint meeting of Congress with the expectation of installing the Mixed Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPMI) that investigates the acts of January 8 in Brasília.

The meeting, which was to take place last week, was suspended by order of the Senate president, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), who frustrated the first attempt to read the commission’s request.

The reading of the CPMI request was scheduled for last Tuesday (18), but the Congress session ended up being postponed, which generated protests from oppositionists and even an attempt to block votes.

However, after the disclosure of images showing the invasion of the Planalto Palace on January 8, with the participation of civilian and military agents of the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI) among the protesters, the attitude changed both on the part of Pacheco and the government – which was trying to demobilize support for the request.

“On the 26th, it will happen what should have happened on the 18th, which is the reading of the CPMI.”

“I have never evaded this in any circumstance; this would be the very referral, the reading of the CPMI, considering that it meets the requirements,” said the president of the Senate last Thursday (20).
